Goin’ back… way back… back into time…

‘Rememories’ is a bit of a nod to Coolio’s ‘I Remember’ - a favourite back-in-the-day track of my mid-90s early high school years. I worked on the bulk of the writing and production of the track in 2014 but it got lost for awhile there before finally brushing the dust off it in 2018.

After working on the beat, I started writing lyrics brainstorming off some of my earliest memories of childhood and Brisbane and took it from there with the first verse. A tricycle on my third birthday (yep - the one I’m riding in the photo), 80s pop music videos and swooping magpies all get a shout out. (Shout out to my family for the fond memories, what a lucky little fella.)

The second verse mostly reflects on moving to Sydney just before starting primary school and some of my significant first memories there. To give some more context to the end of the second verse, there was this large fenced vacant block near school at the time and there were often interesting items dumped there that became discussion starters for us curious kids walking by (needles and used condoms being two highlights getting a mention).

Thanks for listening/reading. Share it around if you like it.

PS Hopefully my parents don’t mind the little dig. Love yooz.

RAINMAN

lyrics

I remember being three getting my first trike
Three wheels of fun, riding it for the first time.
I remember watching videos on TV,
Wondering what love was and who was gonna show me.

Sting wondered if the Russians love their kids too
I mulled over it and thought “well of course they do”.
And I can still smell the rain on the bitumen
Feel the wind on my face - playing on the swings again.

Just another push, just a little bit higher
I can see a fried bat on that live wire.
Magpies swoopin’ on the way home
Just make a run for it with my brothers yelling “Go!’

ABC Songbooks and bedtime stories,
Magic dragons and jabberwockies until I’m snorin’
Plenty of time to rest my weary young head
Getting tucked-in all cosy in my bunk bed

Goin’ back [cuts]

My folks split when I was a coupla months old
I try and think of ‘em together and it’s kinda like “hmm, no
How was that ever gonna work - I mean really though?”
Completely different kinda people - but I love ‘em both

Born in Bris but moved to Sydney as a kid
From hot weather and wide roads to brown brick.
From timber and big backyards to traffic
From the ‘burbs to an inner-city demographic.

Saw my first syringe on the way to school
At the same spot learnt what a condom was too (eww).
Peering through that chain-link fence
Guess it could be said I lost a little innocence (in a sense)

But gained a lot from that vacant block for a six year old
My big brothers on-hand to explain it all.
Learning ‘bout life good, bad and ugly
What a trip, thinking back on that young me.
